FAQ
What is a Two-Way Radio?
A two-way radio is an indispensable communication device designed for seamless interaction among teams, staff, and management. These radios are vital across various industries, including construction, manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, corporate and events, where instant and efficient communication is crucial. By enabling users to communicate instantly, two-way radios ensure smooth coordination and heightened productivity.
What's the Difference Between a Walkie-Talkie and a Two-Way Radio?
While the terms “walkie-talkie” and “two-way radio” are often used interchangeably, both are types of communication devices but differ in their features and capabilities. Walkie-talkies typically refer to consumer-grade devices with limited features and range. On the other hand, professional two-way radios—like the ones supplied by Critico—are built for durability, offering advanced features such as GPS tracking, digital technology, and interference protection.
Do You Need a Licence for a Two-Way Radio?
Depending on the type of radio and the frequency it operates under, you might need an Ofcom or Comreg license. Licensed radios use specific radio frequencies, such as VHF and UHF frequencies, to cover greater distances, making them ideal for expansive sites or complex environments. Critico offers expert advice to help you understand licensing requirements and ensure you’re compliant. Our team can even assist in arranging the appropriate Ofcom License or Comreg TPBR license for your two-way radios.
What Is the difference between UHF and VHF?
UHF stands for “Ultra High Frequency” while VHF stands for “Very High Frequency.” VHF devices have longer wavelengths and operate at a lower frequency than UHF. UHF operates at a higher frequency, but the range is less than VHF. UHF is more likely to be used where signals need to penetrate building walls while VHF is more likely to be used in clear outside environments for the increased range.
Do all Two-way Radios have to be Programmed?
All licensed radios must be programmed to enable them to make and receive calls. License-free radios, or walkie-talkies, do not need to be programmed and can be used straight from the box.
What is the Range of a Two-way Radio?
The range of your two-way radio will depend on many factors including if it is UHF or VHF. The range can vary from a few hundred meters to a couple of miles or more, this also depends on the infrastructure being used such as base stations and repeaters. It is also important to consider that obstacles such as walls, buildings and densely built-up areas can reduce the range significantly. The antenna and signal length of the radio must also be taken into consideration.
What is Push-to-Talk or PTT?
Push-to-Talk refers to the pressing of the button on your radio which switches from voice reception mode to voice transmission mode, this enables instantaneous communication between users. Push-To-Talk is also referred to as Press-to-Talk.
What is an Atex-Certified radio?
ATEX certified means the product meets regulations for the safe use of the radio in a potentially explosive environment or hazardous atmosphere.
Can Two-Way Radios be Tracked?
Yes. Many modern radios come equipped with GPS tracking systems that enable real-time tracking. This is especially beneficial for businesses prioritising worker safety and operational efficiency. For example, we supply a large range radios that include GPS tracking to monitor locations and respond swiftly if assistance is needed.
